Security Enhancements (Multifactor or Mutual Authentication) for FlexTeller
Frequently Asked Questions (PDF Version)
Question: What is Multifactor or Mutual Authentication?
Answer: Multifactor or Mutual Authentication is a security feature that is designed to enhance the security of FlexTeller and to protect the users of Online Banking. It is the process of examining and verifying proper identity using more than one distinct piece of information.
Question: Why has the credit union decided to implement this?
Answer: It has been determined that a simple password is no longer adequate protection for consumers when reviewing their account or conducting certain business on line.
This is a federal regulation, which must be implemented by all financial institutions offering online banking. More information is available at http://www.ncua.gov/letters/2005/CU/05-CU-18.doc.
Question: Can I opt out of this process?
Answer: No – For consumer protection, all financial institutions offering online banking are required to implement this process by December 31st 2006. In December, you will be prompted to activate these additional security features for your account online. We suggest that you beat the rush and complete the multifactor authentication process early. After December 26, 2006, you will not be able to access FlexTeller until you have completed this authentication process.
Question: What “factors” will be in effect for the security enhancements?
Answer: We have chosen to use 3 levels of security.
1. Image Selection
2. Challenge questions
3. Register your PC (optional)
Question: How will I be prompted to select these factors?
Answer: When you logon to FlexTeller (Online Banking) you will see a pop up window that announces Security Enrollment. You will be given the option (until December 26th) t
a. Enhance your Security or
b. Do this Later
When you choose Enhance Your Security, you will see a pop up window that tells you that you are about to update your security settings.
1. Image Selection:
You will be asked to select an image from a number of images on the screen. The image you choose will be presented to you each time you logon to your account as confirmation that you are communicating with our site. Remember your image, as it is our verification to you that you are communicating with us. Each time you sign on to FlexTeller from a non-registered PC your image will be displayed and you will be prompted to answer one of your challenge questions. If an image other than your selected image appears then please disconnect from that session as it maybe an outside attempt to obtain access to your account information.
2. Challenge Questions Enrollment:
You will be required to answer three different challenge questions. There are ten questions that you can select from the drop down box or you can select to create your own question. You will be prompted to enter an answer for each question. One of these questions will be randomly presented when you log into your account on a non-registered PC.
3. Register Your PC (optional)—but very convenient
When you login to FlexTeller after completing the above steps you will be given the option to register your PC. By registering your PC, you allow us to identify that this is a PC that you will use to access your account online on a regular basis. After the initial enrollment, your selected image will not be presented nor will you be prompted to answer one of your challenge questions when using a registered PC to access FlexTeller. Once a PC is registered there is no need for another layer of security. You are not required to register your PC. You should NEVER register a PC that is publicly accessible, such as a PC that you use in a public library.
Question: If I choose to register my PC, how many PC’s can I register?
Answer: You can register as many PC’s as you want. However, we STRONGLY SUGGEST that you DO NOT register a PC that is publicly accessible. Also, if you have several people in your household who use the same PC, each of you can register the PC for your online account access.
Question: Can I UN-register a PC?
Answer: Yes, you can UN-register a PC. After you login to FlexTeller select the User Preferences (Profile) tabs, then click on Clear Security Cookies to un-register your PC.
Question: Can I change my image or challenge questions?
Answer: Yes. After you login to FlexTeller select the User Preference (Profile) tabs, then click on Change Security Info and follow the prompts.
